Adverbs


Definition of Adverbs :-
 
Adverbs are words that are used as modifiers. They add description to the sentence to make it more detailed and interesting. 

For Example : Rahul chewed his food slowly.

The adverb slowly describes the action of chewing thus, giving us more information about the action being done.

Kinds of Adverbs

Adverbs are of many kinds. Adverbs are classified as follows :-

(a) Adverb of Time :- afterwards, already, immediately, last month, now, soon, then, before, today, ago, daily
(b) Adverb of Place :- above, up, below, down, far, near, within, without, away, out, in, under, away
(c) Adverb of Manner :- fast, slowly, hard, quickly, sadly, bravely
(d) Adverb of Frequency or Number :- always, never, rarely, often, seldom, hardly, sometimes, twice, thrice, frequently, hardly
(e) Adverb of Degree or Quantity :- little, enough, much, too, partly, fully
(f) Adverb of Reason :- consequently, doubtlessly, likewise, therefore, thus, hence
(g) Adverb of Comparison :- so ....as, such....as, as fast as
(h) Adverb of Affirmation or Negation :- certainly, surely, perhaps, yes, no

(a) Adverb of Time :- Adverb of Time answers the question 'When?', It indicates the time of the action 
For example

1. We are going to a birthday party
tomorrow.
2. Now I am free.

(b) Adverb of Place :- Adverb of Place answers the question 'Where?' . It indicates the place of the action :
For example


1. Please wait outside the room.
2. I am going there.

(c) Adverb of Manner :- Adverb of Manner answers the question 'How?' or 'In what manner?' It indicates how an action is performed.
For example

1. The fire bridgade had to act fast to stop the spreading fire.
2. He fought bravely.

(d) Adverb of Frequency :- Adverb of Frequency or number answers the question 'How often?' It indicates how often the action takes place.
For example 

1. Richa misses her school bus rarely.
2. You often late.  

(e) Adverb of Degree or Quantity :- Adverb of Degree or Quantity answers the question 'How far'? or 'How much?' It indicates the degree, quantity or extent of an action, quality or manner :
For example 

1. The mangoes were very sweet.
2. My work is almost finished.

(f) Adverb of Reason :- Adverb of Reason answers the question 'Why?' of an action :
For example

1. Thus, your charge is proved.
2.  He will succeed, because he works hard.

(g) Adverb of Comparison :- Adverb of Comparison indicates comparison 
For example 

1. He is as dull as he is fat.
2. Great men such as Mahatma Gandhi are always remembered.

(h) Adverb of Affirmation or Negation :- Adverb of Affirmation of Negation indicates affirmation or negation of an action, statement, belief, opinion etc.
For example

1. I will certainly do it.
2. I will not do it.
